H - Hypatia

Short and concise

Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all.

Who was this straightforward woman?

Hypatia (ca. AD 350–370–March 415) was a Greek Neoplatonist philosopher in Roman Egypt who was the first well-documented woman in mathematics. As head of the Platonist school at Alexandria, she also taught philosophy and astronomy.

What an interesting woman! She must have been a tough one to study mathematics and assert herself back in a time that was very male dominated.

Better to think wrongly than not at all, eh? Well, that's me in mathematics for sure. hehe! Hmm, on second thought, math always made my mind go blank.

Never heard of her. Thanks!

I have not heard of Hypatia. I'll have to read up on her!

If I remember correctly, there was a movie about her one or two years ago...

Didn't see it, but she sounded like a fascinating person.

I honestly was unfamiliar with Hypatia. Glad to know.

Love the quote and she seems like quite a woman!

It's great to learn about women who made their mark in the male-dominated world of her time. Good for her!

A woman before her time! The quote is awesome.

Thanks for the post! More people should know about this remarkable woman. The movie mentioned earlier is called "Agora." I did a "reel vs. real" series of posts on the movie on my blog, as well as several other posts on Hypatia's life and times.

@Faith - I will look up the movie, thank you for the hint!

Motto

"A story is not like a road to follow … it's more like a house. You go inside and stay there for a while, wandering back and forth and settling where you like and discovering how the room and corridors relate to each other, how the world outside is altered by being viewed from these windows. And you, the visitor, the reader, are altered as well by being in this enclosed space, whether it is ample and easy or full of crooked turns, or sparsely or opulently furnished. You can go back again and again, and the house, the story, always contains more than you saw the last time. It also has a sturdy sense of itself of being built out of its own necessity, not just to shelter or beguile you."
