Tasty Tuesday - Apple Crumble

Posted by Claudia Moser on 5:22 PM in ,

My favourite winter fruit, apple and a great combination found here

Ingredients

For the crumble
300g plain flour, sieved pinch of salt
175g unrefined brown sugar
200g unsalted butter, cubed at room temperature
Knob of butter for greasing

For the filling
450g apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1cm/½in pieces
50gunrefined brown sugar
1 tbsp plain flour
1 pinch of ground cinnamon

Preparation method

Preheat the oven to 180C.

Place the flour and sugar in a large bowl and mix well. Taking a few cubes of butter at a time rub into the flour mixture. Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Place the fruit in a large bowl and sprinkle over the sugar, flour and cinnamon. Stir well being careful not to break up the fruit.

Butter a 24cm ovenproof dish. Spoon the fruit mixture into the bottom, then sprinkle the crumble mixture on top.

Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until the crumble is browned and the fruit mixture bubbling.

Serve with thick cream or custard

I have a recipe for this very dish. There's nothing better than the smell of it baking and a taste with some ice cream on the side! Delicious.

That sounds so good on a chilly winter morning! I've always wanted to try an apple crumble. On my list of "to dos!"

I love this dish! My Mom called it "Apple Grunt". I wish I had asked her how it got that name. It was probably some old family joke or something. A delicious dish, for sure!

@Barb - you are right that the smell is amazing, I will do it on Sunday!
@Beachlover - let me know how it went!
@Darlene - for sure there was some joke behind, it sounds funny!

Apple Crumble - you can't get much more English than that. Either served with custard, cream, or ice cream. So easy to make as well, which is just what I like!

@Diane - you are right, it is easy to make and I love it with custard.

Lucky me I found this just before going grocery shopping! Thanks Claudia!

Motto

"A story is not like a road to follow … it's more like a house. You go inside and stay there for a while, wandering back and forth and settling where you like and discovering how the room and corridors relate to each other, how the world outside is altered by being viewed from these windows. And you, the visitor, the reader, are altered as well by being in this enclosed space, whether it is ample and easy or full of crooked turns, or sparsely or opulently furnished. You can go back again and again, and the house, the story, always contains more than you saw the last time. It also has a sturdy sense of itself of being built out of its own necessity, not just to shelter or beguile you."
