This is a such a hard letter, I have so many words in my mind: Life cycle project management, Love, Listen ...

I decided to write about Languages, since they are a very important part of my life. I was born in Timisoara, a city in Romania located in Banat, a truly multicultual and multilingual region. It is absolutely normal that people are fluent in at least 2 languages, for example in Romania, Hungarian, German, Serbian et caetera (I hope Queen of English will approve).

I was fortunate enough to be born in a truly multicultural family and had the chance of learning as a child not only Romanian but also German, a bit of Hungarian and a bit of Serbian (with time the latter a long time forgotten). Then my mom decided that with 5 I should start learning English, it was a game, it was for fun. I knew how to speak it before I even wrote in Romanian. I got private lessons until I was 18 years old and I am so grateful to her.

Then in school we got French as a foreign language which was quite an asset for the future when studying engineering in Lyon. In France I had an Italian room mate and her language was so easy to learn, thus another on my list. Spanish came as a logical consequence so now I am happy to be able to understand, make me understood, read and write in 6 different languages.

To be honest I am considering Russian at the moment, I kind of need it for my work, plus belonging to the slavic family languages it would be something completely new.

Yes, forgot to tell you (for those who don't already know it), Romanian is a latin language, thus Italian, French and Spanish are its relatives!

Some nice relations:

HOME
Casa - Romanian
Casa - Italian
Casa - Spanish
Maison - French (well close LOL)

DOG
Caine - Romanian
Cane - Italian
Perro - Spanish
Chien - French

FAMILY
Familie - Romanian
Famiglia - Italian
Familia - Spanish
La Familie - French

You got the picture :)

Great post! How wonderful it is that you can speak, read, & write in all of those languages! I only know English. I know a few words in Spanish, but not many.

Hi Claudia,
Wow, it's great that you know so many languages. I speak English and know a few French words, that it.
Lovely choice for "L"

Interesting. I'd have thought English was your native language.

Not only do you have the vocabulary down, but the more subtle things, the rhythm of your sentences and the way you structure paragraphs, all of it is pitch perfect.

I took a bit of Russian in college. It's long since left me, but I enjoyed it. The sounds were so different from English, and it required I shape my mouth and use my soft palate in new ways.

It was like learning to make a new kind of music.

Best,
Joe

I took two years of Spanish in college and enjoyed it very much. I can see how those languages are related. I noticed learning one more language does help when learning another. Very interesting L word!

@Becky - thank you for your appreciation, it is indeed an advantage many times.
@Kathy - will do, for sure, visit your blog pretty often :)
@Joe - wow, thank you! Me a native speaker? This is a true tribute for my mom, she really supported me in my language quest!
@Belle - great! So it was worth showing some examples!

Wow, Claudia, how do you keep the different grammars straight in your head?

Yes, I do approve, btw. :-) Thank you for the mention.

@Queen - yes, grammar and so many words, which end up mixing when I'm really really tired!

Motto

"A story is not like a road to follow … it's more like a house. You go inside and stay there for a while, wandering back and forth and settling where you like and discovering how the room and corridors relate to each other, how the world outside is altered by being viewed from these windows. And you, the visitor, the reader, are altered as well by being in this enclosed space, whether it is ample and easy or full of crooked turns, or sparsely or opulently furnished. You can go back again and again, and the house, the story, always contains more than you saw the last time. It also has a sturdy sense of itself of being built out of its own necessity, not just to shelter or beguile you."
