Short holiday

The challenge under the Fun with Blogging is called vacation and I thought I'd share with you my 5 hour holiday, spend in Aschaffenburg, Germany while attending the Carillon Festival.

Carillon you might ask? What is this? It is actually a musical instrument that is usually housed in a free-standing bell tower, or the belfry of a church or other municipal building. The instrument consists of at least 23 cast bronze cup-shaped bells, which are played serially to play a melody, or sounded together to play a chord. I have added the a video with a wonderful interpretation of the song Fascination.

We just enjoyed the music, the atmosphere (the festival also encourages the traditional crafts), the castle's museum and a lovely lunch with friends. My today's lesson? You do not need to travel far away to have a break, a holiday can be spend also in intense 5 hours.

Hi Claudia. You've posted some lovely photos there for us, and I so agree with you that you don't have to go very far to have a nice break. Glad you had a good time. Looks a lovely place.

Lovely concert, perfect weather for a "Tagesausflug". I love Aschaffenburg, and the Spessart. And I WANT that Schrank - and the Uhr, too! And their Parkett, but it all won't fit into my car (LOL). Aside from that, you like calling Aschaffenburg a 'castle'? I can never be exactly sure what you call a 'Schloß'. Most of the time I settle for 'château', and save 'castle' when I refer to the building they call a 'Burg', simply because Knights in Shining Armour never lived in 'Schlösser'. But technically a 'Schloß' is a 'castle' in English, so I'm still confused. Thanks for the pics! I really needed a 'Tagesausflug' today!

I'm proud to say I live in a town with a carillon, although, to be honest, I don't know that I've ever heard it chime. Yoink! Something to look forward to after hearing the lovely music on your blog ... . And the pix are great, too. Is the painting a Frida Kahlo? It looks like her style. Just wondering....

Sometimes the best holidays are those that fall under the heading "Mini" - I am always taking mini vacations in my neck of the world. I'm glad you do the same!

How did I miss this post? In college there was a Carillon at a vacation site near Atlanta called Stone Mountain. It is on an island in the middle of a lake and you can hear it play while climbing the mountain! Carved in the face of the mountain are three figures of the Confederate States Of America...those of the Civil War era. I always enjoyed the notes drifting through the air and across the lakes. An added ripple...
