A Warm Cuppa in Chilly Joure: A Visit to the Douwe Egberts Museum

Posted by Claudia Moser on 9:16 AM

The biting wind whipped around us as we stepped out of the car in Joure, a quaint town in Friesland. The sky, a canvas of bruised purples and greys, promised more than just a chilly day – and it delivered.

Despite the cold nipping at our noses, a warmth of anticipation grew. We were about to delve into the history of one of the Netherlands' most beloved brands, a name synonymous with that comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and tea. The Douwe Egberts Museum, housed in the original buildings where Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses started their grocery business in 1753, felt like stepping back in time.

Inside, the chill of the morning quickly melted away. The museum is a treasure trove of historical artifacts, from ancient coffee grinders and tea chests to beautifully preserved packaging and advertising materials. You can almost smell the roasting coffee beans as you wander through the meticulously recreated scenes of a traditional grocery store. It's fascinating to see how a small family business evolved over centuries to become an international giant, all while maintaining its commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

One of the highlights was learning about the intricate process of coffee roasting and blending. The exhibits clearly explain the journey from bean to cup, and it truly makes you appreciate that morning brew even more. And, of course, no visit to a coffee and tea museum would be complete without the opportunity to sample some! The aroma alone was enough to make you feel cozy, but the actual taste was a delightful warmth that spread through us, a perfect antidote to the lingering cold outside.

As we left Douwe Egberts Museum, a sudden, a delightful snow shower began. Fat, fluffy flakes danced through the air, briefly transforming the already charming Dutch streets into a winter wonderland. Even if it only lasted 10 minutes!

As we savored our hot beverages, looking out at the last lingering traces of the snow shower, it struck me how perfectly the Douwe Egberts story intertwines with the feeling of comfort and home. On a cold, blustery day in Joure, surrounded by history and the inviting scent of coffee, it was a reminder that some traditions, and some tastes, are truly timeless.

If you ever find yourself in Friesland, especially on a day when the weather calls for a little extra warmth, I highly recommend a visit to the Douwe Egberts Museum. It's more than just a museum; it's an experience that awakens your senses and offers a heartwarming glimpse into Dutch heritage.

Motto

"A story is not like a road to follow … it's more like a house. You go inside and stay there for a while, wandering back and forth and settling where you like and discovering how the room and corridors relate to each other, how the world outside is altered by being viewed from these windows. And you, the visitor, the reader, are altered as well by being in this enclosed space, whether it is ample and easy or full of crooked turns, or sparsely or opulently furnished. You can go back again and again, and the house, the story, always contains more than you saw the last time. It also has a sturdy sense of itself of being built out of its own necessity, not just to shelter or beguile you."
